BOOK: Griffin’s Boy

Creatures, Creatures Everywhere

I got to spend a lovely weekend in New York City a little while ago, including a great trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. (Pro tip: when you are overwhelmed and exhausted by culture, a visit to the East Asian wing is quite soothing.)

I found these delightful legendary creatures who would have been quite at home in the menagerie from The Griffin’s Boy–it was like finding old friends peering from plinths and creeping about in carved stone archways.

(The image in the middle is officially a “chimera” which is museum-speak for “we don’t know what the heck this is supposed to be.” I believe that’s a lion’s head with wings along the back–perhaps an entirely new type of legendary beast?)

Oh my sainted aunt, I am so excited to receive an invite for School Library Journal‘s LibraryCon Live! I’ll be on a fantasy panel talking about my upcoming book, The Griffin’s Boy, on November 14th.
This book was a dearly beloved manuscript that spent ten years (yes, an entire decade) in a drawer because no editor anywhere found it remotely interesting, to my bafflement–it has a baby griffin and a miniature dragon in it; how could anybody be less than enchanted? To have it finally find a home with Peachtree book is balm to my soul, and to be able to talk about it on a panel with other fantasy writers–it just makes me giddy.

Ziphius

The ziphius is the one in the middle. Do not let the mournful eyes deceive you. It’s a killer.

This morning I sent off to my agent an outline for a sequel to The Griffin’s Boy. If I get the go-ahead to write it, I hope will heavily feature a legendary water creature, the ziphius or water owl.

With a beaked face and a sharp dorsal fin, it could attack ships by puncturing them or gnawing on them. A delightful and little known creature…I do hope I get the chance to include it in a book. Fingers crossed, everybody!
